How to Shop for a Grappler
For people who love a grappler and do not understand why. Three don'ts, three do's, and a size cheat sheet. Grapplers: send this to whoever's buying your gifts.
Three don'ts
Don't 01 · Buy them a belt.
Belts are earned, and their coach is the one who hands them out. A new color from you is a costume.
Instead: their rank on a Knot A Belt keychain. No promotion required. No coach offended.
Don't 02 · Guess their gi size.
Gis are sized by height and weight, every brand's chart is a little different, and most cotton gis shrink some in the wash.
Instead: sneak a look at the label on the gi they already own.
Don't 03 · Pick a gi color at random.
Some gyms only allow white, blue or black. Some want their own patch, or their own gi, full stop.
Instead: match the color they already wear. Or skip the gi and go rashguard.
Do 01 · Sizing, decoded.
| Rashguard | Their t-shirt size. Snug is normal. Between sizes, go up. |
| Shorts | Their waist size, or whatever size their gym shorts are. |
| Spats | Their leggings size. |
| Gi | The label on the gi they own, checked against our chart. |
| Kids | Go by their height on the chart. Size up. They grow. |
| Hoodie, tee | Same as always. You've got this one. |

Do 02 · Buy what they burn through.
Finger tape. Candles for the sore days. A bag that survives the gym. They go through all of it and never remember to restock. Nobody has ever returned tape.
